Job Summary

AECOM is seeking a Lead Hand Carpenter to be based in our Grand Prairie, Alberta location.

This position may construct, renovate, erect and repair buildings and other structures made of wood, wood substitutes, steel and other materials. In commercial or industrial jobs, may build concrete forms, scaffolding, bridges, trestles, tunnels, shelters, towers and other structures. May repair and remodel existing structures of all kinds. May carpenters specialize in one type of work such as framing, bench work or finishing work.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Consistently display all the Knowledge, Skills and Abilities directly related to the Carpenter Journeyperson requirements

  • Lead a small group of employees in the same trade, playing an intermediate role between workers and supervisors and is responsible for the smooth and safe operation of the team, helping the workers to meet goals, and mediating concerns with upper management

  • Coordinates the team and is responsible for applying policies and procedures

  • Involved with, and supportive of, disciplinary actions brought about by supervisors

  • Other duties may include arranging for extra workers, evaluating the quality of work of team members, organizing crew tasks, maintaining work standards, resolving issues between team members, and mentoring apprentices

  • Promotes a safe work environment and is responsible for the safety of the crew with a clear understanding of any related occupational and safety laws.

  • Ensure team members comply with safety regulations, identify a need for safety training, complete an initial safety and hazard assessment, participate in accident investigations, and see to timely resolution of safety concerns

  • Accountable for team’s ability to meet production goals and may identify requirements for specific materials or tools and communicate these requests to the appropriate person to support team production.

  • Inform supervisor of any scheduling conflicts and assists in resolving them

  • Understands the need to prioritize work schedules to meet goals

  • Reports into Trade or General Foreman, depending on size of the project

  • May report directly into Superintendent if smaller project

Minimum Requirements

Journeyman Certification and/or Interprovincial Red Seal

Preferred Qualifications

CSTS (Construction Safety Training Systems) or PST (Petroleum Safety Training)

H2S Alive

First Aid – Standard Level

CSE (Confined Space Entry)

Fall Arrest and/or Fall Protection (OSSA issued ticket is the general requirement)

AWP – Aerial work platform

Red Seal preferred or required by provincial regulations and standards
