About the Business Line


We create comprehensive delivery solutions for water, wastewater and wet weather systems, desalination, water resources, water reuse, tunneling, and community infrastructure through traditional and alternative delivery services such as program management and design-build.

Job Summary

The Water Business Unit of AECOM is actively seeking a proactive Geotechnical Engineer. This position is located in our Germantown, MD office in the DC Metro Area.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, those listed below:

  • Perform geotechnical tasks and working closely with other disciplines to meet the project needs

  • Oversight and management of a variety of subsurface investigation programs

  • Adhere to AECOM safety culture and maintaining safe work environment

  • Assign geotechnical laboratory testing

  • Perform design calculations for pavements, shallow and deep foundation, tunnel components, and retaining walls, temporary and permanent support of excavation

  • Perform settlement analysis, ground improvement analyses, slope stability analyses, seepage analyses,

  • Prepare of engineering reports and memoranda

  • Perform construction oversight

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Geotechnical Engineering or related field

  • 2+ years of demonstrated geotechnical engineering experience in the field and office

  • EIT Certification

  • Thorough understanding of the concepts of soil mechanics

  • Experience with pavement design, shallow and deep foundations, slope stability

  • Experience with gINT, Geostudio and pavement design software

  • Ability to work in inclement weather

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.

  • Must possess a valid driver's license

  • Due to the nature of this work, U.S. citizenship is required

​Position may require travel up to 20-30 percent for a period up to 1 week.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of geology within Virginia, Maryland and District of Columbia

  • Experience in monitoring fill placement, pile driving and general geotechnical construction

  • P.E. certification

  • Demonstrated hands-on experience of conducting large scale subsurface investigations using various drilling methodologies.

  • Experience with geotechnical laboratory testing.

  • Experience with installation and monitoring of instrumentation

  • Experience with technical report writing

  • Strong written and oral communication, quantitative and interpersonal skills
