Job Summary

The Water Business Unit of AECOM is actively seeking a creative, highly talented senior manager to provide business development, technical and management leadership for our geotechnical department located in Germantown, Maryland. The group is comprised of roughly 40 professionals covering the practice areas of Geotechnical Engineering, Dams Engineering, Geophysics and Structural Engineering. This position can be located in any of our offices in the Washington/Baltimore Metro Area, with expectations of being in Germantown regularly, as necessary.

The appropriately qualified applicant will be able to demonstrate an established expertise in the Geotechnical Engineering field.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Coordinate with Regional Business Line Leadership in the development of strategic business initiatives

  • Generate new business and achieve annual sales goals for the department

  • Review and approve all proposals developed by the department

  • Identify new strategic initiatives and coordinate Talent Acquisition activities with leadership to ensure goals are met

  • Collaborate in GO/NOGO decisions, pursuit strategy, and proposal/interview efforts

  • Provide support to and/or act in the capacity of Project/Program Managers as appropriate

  • Monitor and manage the group’s utilization and direct labor to ensure goals are met

  • Provide direction to the Team Leaders to ensure the financial reporting and administrative requirements are attained

  • Manage Team Leader’s performance, develop and deliver annual performance reviews

  • Establish and maintain productive work relationships with internal and external clients

  • Ensure a safe work environment for staff and monitor project activities to encourage safety

  • Perform department management responsibilities including the review and approval of weekly timesheets, vacation requests, and expense reports for Geotechnical Engineering staff

  • Provide mentorship for staff and develop/adjust group structure with a focus on opportunity

  • Promote professional development and ensure various certifications for staff are attained in corporate, office and industry programs

  • Perform Quality Control Review of all products produced by staff, including proposals

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering or related field

  • 15+ years of experience in the in the Geotechnical and/or Dam Engineering field including 5 years of experience in personnel-line management

  • Focus and interest in leading business development activities for the Department

  • Experience with a diverse client base including federal, state, municipal and private sectors

  • Ability to understand, lead and manage a team of multidisciplinary staff with diverse professional and technical backgrounds

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer

  • Strong written and oral communication, quantitative and interpersonal skills

  • Strong work ethic and professional demeanor

  • Proactive on assignments and demonstrate initiative

  • The ability to work with other engineering disciplines at various locations, both internal and external to AECOM is

  • This position involves working in a supervisory mode with a close-knit team of design professionals where effective communication is an important part of the job
