Job Summary

AECOM’s Edmonton office is currently seeking a Graduate Geotechnical Engineer. This position will demand a sound knowledge of engineering principles, focused on Geotechnical Engineering, and the ability to apply these principles in practice.

As a member of the Northern Alberta Geotechnical Engineering team, the person in this role will undertake a variety of office and site assignments, generally under the supervision of a more senior Geotechnical Engineer. The expectation is that this person will rapidly develop his/her abilities and pursue a keen interest in learning and training. Careful attention to detail will be required.

Responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to:

  • Being involved in multiple projects across disciplines including site investigations, civil/geotechnical analysis, design, and construction inspection; utilizing a range of technical software and hand calculations.

  • Conducting technical analysis, report writing, conceptual and preliminary and detailed designs under direction.

  • Working with an experienced team in a wide variety of major civil infrastructure, mining, and oil and gas projects.

  • Assisting with the preparation of proposals for new work.

  • Both applying basic engineering principles and approaching situations with alternate perspectives and new ideas.

  • Traveling to work sites for extended periods to conduct Geotechnical investigations or to provide technical support, such as construction monitoring.

  • This work may include work for other disciplines, and the acquisition of new skills.

Minimum Requirements

  • University degree – preferably Civil, Geotechnical or Geological Engineering..

  • 0 - 2 years of relevant project experience; North American experience preferred with a focus on civil earthworks and geotechnical engineering

  • Eligibility for registration as a P.Eng. with APEGA

  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills in the English language, including report writing

  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills

  • Strong customer service skills

  • Ability to manage time effectively

  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word

  • Knowing when to ask for help

  • A good grounding in Soil Mechanics

  • A good grounding in Slope Stability Analysis and solutions to slope stability problems, Bearing Capacity assessment and the solutions to bearing capacity problems, Settlement analysis and solutions to settlement problems.

  • Ability to use specialist proprietary software to carry out the above analyses.

  • Agility, flexibility and the drive to go beyond the requirements of the role.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-graduate degree in Geotechnical Engineering

  • Finite Element Modelling training/experience

  • Excellent knowledge of MS PowerPoint, Project or Access
