Job Summary

AECOM is actively seeking a highly motivated Entry-Level Traffic Operations Engineer to be employed at a client facility located in Detroit, Michigan. The position is responsible for supporting and execution of a variety of tasks associated with the operation, maintenance and enhancement of the client’s arterial intelligent transportation systems (ITS). The client’s ITS deployments include technologies such as a centralized traffic signal management system (TACTICS), surveillance cameras, probe data sources, and wired/wireless communications. The system is expanding to include connectivity to all city owned traffic signal systems.

The position will report to the AECOM project management team and work directly with the client staff on-site. The candidate will need to be professional, self-motivated, resourceful, effectively communicate, and able to successfully execute a wide-range of tasks. The appropriately qualified candidate will need to demonstrate an understanding of today’s traffic signal and ITS technology along with future trends in the industry along with how they are applied to daily roadway operations.

Under the responsible charge of a Professional Engineer:

  • Monitor, observe and contribute to improved traffic operations and incident management using the various ITS technologies and client relationship from a position with the client facility

  • Gather system data, operational observations, intersection conditions, and contribute solutions to existing system deficiencies

  • Develop, modify and use traffic signal system models (based upon Synchro)

  • Assess, monitor, manage, and report on the performance of the traffic signal system

  • Review, investigate, resolve and address operational concerns of the roadway network as reported by the public or client

  • Perform before/after evaluations of system adjustments, incidents, or other events to assess user delay costs or value to the public

  • May require travel within Michigan to serve the project, potential exists for one to two day trips at infrequent intervals

  • Effectively manage all assigned tasks and schedules

  • Coordinate effectively with AECOM management, agency staff, contractors, and other consultants

  • Interact professionally and proactively with clients to ensure they are highly satisfied with deliverables as provided

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, traffic engineering, electronics and communications, ITS engineering, or appropriate discipline

  • Computer proficiency: Windows environment, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, Access); MicroStation, AutoCAD, Synchro/SimTraffic, HCS, and ability to maintain in adherence with an organized project file management structure

  • Must have the ability to work other shifts and/or overtime in support of operations during special events or significant unplanned events; advanced notice provided with exception of periodic and infrequent significant unplanned events

  • Ability to communicate clearly, convince others, and present in public

  • Ability to efficiently and effectively speak, read and write on technical topics in the English language

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high level of self-motivation and resourcefulness

  • Demonstrated ability to develop technical reports, documents, client communication and technical memoranda

  • Must possess a valid driver license in good standing

Preferred Qualifications

  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) preferred

  • 1+ year of practical experience in a professional engineering related work environment

  • Experience with traffic signal controller programming and operations

  • Experience with TACTICS central signal control system software

  • Experience with data manipulation, management and processing
