Job Summary

We are seeking to locate a career minded Senior Director who has attained the relevant railway systems work experience at a senior level coupled with a proven track record of delivery within the Rail Systems sector. The individual will possess the abilities to effectively lead, control and direct a large team of Engineers in the management and delivery of railway system engineering schemes throughout the UK and Overseas:

Duties & Responsibilities:

Reporting to the SVP Rail EMEA, the candidate will be fully accountable for managing and directing the rail systems team, providing both leadership and technical guidance to team members, while developing the team to its full potential. The candidate will also be responsible for ensuring and /or implementing right-shaping of resources and effective resource management in line with business plan requirements, guaranteeing the profitable operation of the team by assisting with delivery of the Business plan and achievement of the agreed KPI’s, financial targets, acquiring new business from existing clients, and assist the SVP Rail EMEA in identifying new client acquisition targets,promoting effective and efficient bid management in liaison with Commercial Manager and Client Relations Director.

Also, the candidate will be fully engaged with and utilise the Global Design Centres (GDCs) as key members and resources of your team, and as a seamless part of our service offering in line with the BU and Sector Strategy and through an effective review process, oversee the delivery of projects on time, meeting both quality and budgetary targets, while striving to exceed client expectations, promoting and marketing all facets of the company’s services during client interfaces and generally and encouraging innovative and entrepreneurial thinking among team members.

Responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:

Commercial Management

  • Take responsibility for ensuring all programmes and projects the rail system team works on have monthly commercial reviews lead by the Project Managers.

  • Take the lead on ensuring projects are performing in line with or ahead of bid strategy – KPIs include spend profile, LDF, Operating profit.

  • Develop and display a high level of commercial and entrepreneurial expertise in the exercise of the duties of the role to achieve monthly targets for the team.

  • Ensure rigorous implementation of review process to enable clear understanding of risk and opportunity positions, within projects and/or at a wider business level.

  • Develop and maintain enduring relationships with local, national and international clients.

  • Ensure all bids are fully compliant and commercially sound in line with agreed authorisation levels.

  • Deliver projects or elements of projects on time and within budget

Operational Management

  • Provide sound and effective leadership to the team, leading by example to achieve company goals and championing a quality culture

  • Managing all aspects of resources on projects within the team

  • Work closely with the Technical Consultants and Project and Programme Managers on the technical review of projects and any technical issues that arise.

  • Ensure rigorous implementation of review process and wider compliance with Company Systems.

  • Build effective and enduring relationships with other teams in the office, region, and other AECOM offices and external bodies to foster co-operation and to maximise cross-sell and trade-up opportunities

  • Implement a high level of innovation in technical issues, problem solving and the culture of the team, leading by example.

Minimum Requirements

Essential Experience:

  • Experience of overseeing and being responsibility for the commercial performance of numerous programmes and projects at the same time

  • Experience of leading, motivating and driving teams of engineers

  • Significant Experience of working on railway systems on major infrastructure projects

  • Strong Commercial & contractual background

  • Significant Programme and Project Management experience particularly with regards to financial management and delivery

  • Client focussed - experienced at building client relationships, winning work and delivering

Preferred Qualifications

Minimum Academic Qualifications:

• Chartered Engineer, Fellow of IRSE
