About the Business Line
We provide professional services in areas such as aviation, transit, freight rail, highways and bridges, planning, and ports and marine. Our global network of top-tier specialists delivers comprehensive services over the full life cycle of a project to benefit clients in government and private industries.
Our Transportation team currently have a vacancy for a Senior Traffic Engineer with experience of traffic engineering / management scheme design. AECOM are currently expanding their already substantial Local Roads team in our Chesterfield office.
AECOM is the sole provider of professional and technical services to the Midlands Highways Alliance (MHA); a group of local authorities in the Midlands area of the UK.
The successful candidate will be recently chartered or working to achieve this status and will have proven design and project management experience delivering to quality, time and budget. They will have experience of working as part of project teams developing concept, feasibility and preliminary for a variety of traffic and road safety engineering schemes, urban realm and public transport improvements. The role would suit a self-motivated individual looking to advance their career in a dynamic team.
The Chesterfield office has an established track record of successfully delivering transportation projects throughout the UK in both the urban and rural environment. The office is located in East Midlands with good transportation connections. The office has a full range of capabilities including Environment, Structures, Health &Safety together with a full transportation design and planning capability. We are now looking to enhance and grow the local traffic team with an individual or individuals with a sound technical background that share our enthusiasm and determination to support our expanding workload.
The team provides concept, feasibility, preliminary and detailed design as well as associated scheme assessment services on a wide range of traffic and road safety engineering projects and also supports other AECOM business lines where their projects have a highway interface. Our Local Roads team is primarily involved with providing professional and technical support to the MHA Framework, although it provides support to a variety of other clients and also includes road safety auditing and collision investigation.
Our clients are from the private and public sector and include Highways England, Derbyshire County Council, Leicestershire County Council and Horizon Power.

The appropriate level of technical expertise is required in order that the Job/ Project Accountabilities listed below can be carried out to the necessary standards
Receive project brief and carry out briefing of the junior team members and lead on analysing data, development of design drawings and report production.
Undertake Health & Safety duties including ensuring a safe and healthy working environment for the project team members and fulfilling all responsibilities for health and safety in design.
Act as a Project Manager (once accredited) as necessary including monitoring financial performance.
Ensure technical content and quality of output produced is in line with the project brief.
Manage sub-consultants to produce deliverables against agreed timescales and in line with budget.
Attend Project Progress meetings.
Prepare detailed client briefs or fee proposals for Manager approval and contribute to major bids Support team manager in mentoring junior staff.
You will have excellent technical and communication skills along with experience of undertaking a range of traffic engineering design projects.
Demonstrate experience of traffic engineering/management design at concept, feasibility and preliminary level
Ability to demonstrate experience or understanding in the following areas:
Understanding of Health and Safety including PSDP responsibilities
Working on a variety of projects as project manager or task manager leader
Urban street, traffic signal, cycling, walking, road safety, public transport, ITS and parking design
Application and use of DMRB, Manual for Streets and the Traffic Signs Regulations and Traffic Signs Manuals.
Proficient user of AutoCAD
Dealing directly with clients
Contributing to bids and proposals
Mentoring junior staff
Whilst not essential any of the following skills would be desirable:
Appreciation of traffic modelling and ability to interrogate outputs,
Experience of applying DMRB and the principles of Manual for Streets, and
Completion of RoSPA Accident Investigation Course (or similar)
You will have a relevant degree and will be a Chartered Engineer or will be working towards an appropriate Chartered status with membership of a professional institution.
BSc, BEng or MEng degree in Civil Engineering or other relevant subject
Certificate of Competence for Road Safety Audits
