Job Summary

Our Strategic Highways team currently has vacancies for Principal Highways Engineers to join our team in Chesterfield, with team management and highways technical experience, to work on major trunk road and motorways in UK and internationally.

The successful candidate will join AECOM’s established Midlands business which continues to expand following several major project wins. The successful candidate will have demonstrable highways experience, show leadership qualities and have experience of major highways design and project management.

The highways business in the Midlands represents over 40 years of accumulated skills, experience and established culture in the delivery of all types of highway schemes; including major motorway improvements such as the M1 widening near Nottingham, SMART Motorway projects on the M1, M3 and M6, major trunk routes including the A50 between Stoke and Derby, and prestigious projects such as the Mersey Gateway. Our modern offices in Chesterfield have good transport links and the teams have an established reputation for quality and delivery. We are looking to enhance and enlarge these teams with people who have a sound technical background and share our enthusiasm and determination.

Currently engaged on a number of interesting and challenging projects on the UK national network, particularly for Highways England, we are seeking an experienced highway engineer to lead a team delivering secured work and bidding for the next opportunities. Our teams in Chesterfield are currently undertaking design work for new junctions on the A38 through Derby, improvements to junctions on the A52 in Nottingham and providing construction stage design support to A5 Dunstable Bypass, the Mersey Gateway and the M3 J2 to 4a Smart Motorway.

Job Responsibilities:

The appropriate level of technical expertise is required in order that the Job/ Project Accountabilities listed below can be carried out to the expected standards.

  • Provide technical leadership, expertise and project management across a range of specialisms in the field of highway engineering.

  • Reporting to Associate Directors and Directors you will undertake a variety of tasks providing as an individual or through team effort, a range of design and written deliverables.

  • Show technical leadership and through experience, mentor and guide the skills of others in computer based applications and tasks including use of software such as MX, WinDES, and the Microsoft Office Suite of programmes including MSProject.

  • Undertake Project activities in line with Company Policy, including technical and commercial aspects, as appropriate to your grade.

  • Take a lead role on projects within particular skill area – e.g. drainage team leader, pavement design leader, geometric layout etc.

  • Plan, lead and undertake site visits, as required.

  • Plan and attend meetings – internal and external, as required.

  • Liaise with sub-consultants and external parties, as required.

  • Collaborate with AECOM, Client and Contractor staff on project teams.

  • Manage staff including performance assessments, mentoring and training.

  • Participate as a team member on a number of levels, including; office discipline and projects.

  • Be proactive and contribute to a safer work environment.

Minimum Requirements

For this role, we are seeking a Chartered or Incorporated Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers, with a degree in Civil Engineering. The role requires:

• Extensive post graduate experience in the design of highways to UK standards;

• A highly motivated individual with excellent oral and written communication skills;

• Full lifecycle experience across a range of projects;

• Significant technical design experience across a range of disciplines to DMRB and MCHW;

• A demonstrable understanding of Health and Safety including CDM;

• A strong desire to achieve technical excellence.

The individual will have proven design experience of delivering to quality, time and budget. They will have experience of working collaboratively as part of a team developing a range of major highway and infrastructure projects. The role will suit a self-motivated individual who is aspiring to take a lead role in project delivery and manage dynamic teams delivering high quality projects. The post may require the individual to work away from Chesterfield for short durations to suit project needs

Preferred Qualifications

• BSc, BEng or MEng in Civil Engineering;

• Chartered Engineer and member of respective professional institution;

• Design and Build experience;

• Site Supervision experience;

• A full clean driving licence;

• Principal Designer Experience.
