Job Summary

AECOM is actively seeking an energetic and enthusiastic Transportation Engineer for immediate employment in the Charlotte, NC office. The appropriately qualified applicant will be able to demonstrate knowledge of engineering principals related to multimodal transportation specific to the North Carolina and the southeastern United States. The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Participates in complex engineering and planning studies

  • Assists in the conceptual and functional design of transportation solutions

  • Conducts research and prepares statistical reports on transportation issues

  • Provides professional engineering and planning assistance to member communities

  • Develops plans, studies and analyses on regional and local basis

  • Works in regional program areas relating to multimodal transportation including transit, highway, pedestrian and bicycle facilities particularly as they relate to land use and urban and rural form

  • Performs field inspections to gather data relevant to the project development process

  • Supports senior staff in preparation for meetings and presentations

  • Plans, schedules, conducts or coordinates detailed phases of the planning work in a part of a major project or in a total task of moderate scope

  • Participates in public meetings or hearings to explain planning proposals, to gather feedback from those affected by projects, or to achieve consensus on project designs

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis on Transportation, Transportation Planning, or related field

  • 2+ years of experience in Transportation Planning or Transportation Engineering

  • Proficient in the Microsoft Office suite

  • Knowledge of and experience working with the National Environmental Policy Act compliance documentation for transportation projects, or supporting elements such as conceptual and functional design, traffic engineering, Noise, Air Quality, etc.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills for facilitating relationships with elected/appointed officials, and for public involvement activities

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Team collaboration oriented

  • Creative problem-solving skills to gather relevant information to solve less well-defined planning problems

  • Ability to work on several projects or issues simultaneously

  • Knowledge of relevant computer hardware and software programs, which may include Microstation, GIS, Google Earth Pro, and Adobe

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Urban Planning, Transportation, Public Policy, or related field or demonstrated combination of education, skills, knowledge, ability and experience

  • Advanced knowledge of the philosophies, principals, practices and techniques of engineering

  • Broad understanding of transportation systems and system planning

  • Experience working on NCDOT project development projects involving compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) projects

  • Experience working on multimodal transportation projects including, bicycle, pedestrian, transit, and highway projects

  • Ability to interpret planning legislation and municipal requirements; and ability to determine compliance with such regulations and to apply regulations to field condition
