Our team of environment specialists offers clients expertise in air quality, impact analysis and permitting, environmental health and safety management consulting/due diligence, remediation consulting/engineering and construction/site restoration, specialty and emerging technologies, waste services and water and natural resources.

Job Summary

AECOM's Charlotte, NC offices are currently seeking an Environmental Technician I to support environmental field services work including surface water and groundwater sampling, as well as slug testing of monitoring wells at various privately-owned client properties. Work will primarily take place in North & South Carolina. This is a Part-Time Variable position and work schedule will vary (up to 40 to 60 hours/week). The selected candidate(s) should be self-motivated, able to follow through with assignments with minimal direction, and possess a high degree of health and safety awareness.

Responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to:

  • Coordination with task and project managers, working with on-site subcontractors and field staff, supporting sampling, data collection, and field documentation

  • Specific duties include assisting with project execution with oversight from the task and site managers, developing staging and mobilization/scheduling plans, task listings, logistical plans and equipment inventories for field sampling events, preparing field journal entries, maintaining photo-documentation in accordance with standard practices and expectations, developing and maintaining instrumentation QA/QC data sheets as well as field logs in support of environmental investigations

  • Specific field work includes surface water and groundwater sampling, aquifer testing, and compilation of field data. Candidate must have ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and will be teamed with another Technician

  • Interaction with client may be necessary

  • While these tasks will make up the majority of the work assignments, additional activities may include various types of project administrative and support tasks

  • Report to multiple, assigned task managers and work under the purview of Environmental Project and Program Managers

  • Capable of understanding technical work requirements with minimal training, explanation and oversight

Minimum Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • 6 months of classroom or practical experience with field sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Geology, etc.) OR a minimum of six (6) months of work experience performing entry level industrial or plant work; or collecting or using environmental data; or performing operations and maintenance activities.

  • Must pass a State and Federal criminal history/security background check; many projects/ clients are security sensitive

  • Must pass pre-employment drug screen

  • Must participate in and successfully complete a post-offer, pre-employment fitness for duty questionnaire

  • Candidate must be able to meet the medical clearance requirements of an OSHA (HAZWOPER) medical surveillance physical examination

  • Flexibility to work all shifts, including extended hours/12 hour shifts for five days per week.

  • Ability to travel on a daily basis, up to 80% of the time and for over-night stays Monday-Friday; while some projects may be local, most will require travel and overnight stay during the work week for project duration.

  • Excellent work ethic and team-player attitude

  • Strong attention to detail, with proven ability to follow specific instructions

  • Ability to effectively express his or herself orally and in writing to other project staff

  • Basic computer skills; Microsoft Office applications

  • Position may include hand bailing groundwater wells, using portable tools, and wearing associated personal protective equipment

  • Must possess a valid driver's license and clean driving record

  • US citizenship required

  • Physically able, with or without an accommodation, to work in outdoor environments with uneven terrain, on or around water, and in variable outdoor conditions including heat, cold, moisture, dryness, and noise; position requires frequent standing/walking; often repetitive bending & stooping, and lifting of less than 25 pounds; occasional lifting of 25-50 pounds, keyboard/mouse operations, and repetitive or fine hand movements; rareworking with arms above shoulder level, power gripping/squeezing (hand tools, levers, etc.), operation of vehicles, stair climbing, and work around heavy, moving, dangerous equipment. Position will include wearing associated personal protective equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Coalition for Construction Safety (CCS) certification eligible or currently possess one

  • Trade certification, Associates Degree(s) and/or Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Science

  • First Aid/CPR training completion

  • 40 Hour HAZWOPER or OSHA 10-Hour Construction completion is preferred; selected candidate may be required to complete OSHA 10-Hour Construction (at company expense) if neither training is completed and current

  • Experience or knowledge of environmental regulations including CERCLA, RCRA, and state/local regulatory agency requirements, groundwater and/or surface water sampling, quality control/quality assurance, analytical laboratory custody
