Job Summary

The Transmission and Distribution division within the Energy sector requires the services of a suitably qualified and experienced substation and transmission line electrical engineer in the Centurion office. The individual will be responsible for Transmission, Distribution and Hydro-Power Plant and Water treatment plant projects within Africa. AECOM Centurion currently has pending appointments for Hydro Power stations and requires services of an electrical engineer for construction supervision at the Gibela manufacturing plant. The engineer will also assist the Building Services electrical team who have lost a few members of their team. This recruitment is also in line with the Energy department’s goal to build capacity in order to better service clients and win new work.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Pre-feasibility studies, conceptual designs and detailed design of the following:

  • Transmission substations.

  • Overhead power lines.

  • Distribution substations.

  • Outdoor and indoor MV& HV Switchgear.

  • MV&LV motors, motor control centres.

  • Standby diesel generators and Gas driven generators.

  • Cabling.

  • SCADA.

  • Small Power and Lighting.

  • Variable speed drives.

  • Battery tripping units.

  • Uninterruptable Power Supply systems.

  • Protection, Metering and Control schemes.

  • Reactors and Capacitor Banks.

  • Static Variable Compensators.

  • Earthing.

Minimum Requirements

  • Minimum of 15 years of relevant post-graduate working experience of the following:

  • Transmission and distribution substations.

  • Overhead power lines up to 400kV.

  • Outdoor and indoor MV& HV Switchgear.

  • MV&LV motors.

  • Motor starters and control centres.

  • Standby diesel generators and Gas driven generators.

  • Cabling.

  • SCADA.

  • Small Power and Lighting.

  • Variable speed drives.

  • Battery tripping units.

  • Uninterruptable Power Supply systems.

  • Protection, Metering and Control schemes

  • Reactors and capacitor banks.

  • Static Variable Compensators and Earthing.

  • Minimum 10 years of relevant post-graduate working experience in the HV power system environment with particular focus on substation design projects up to 400kV.

  • At least 5 years of specific substation (primary or secondary plant) design experience.

  • Knowledge of AUTOCAD (2D and 3D) and Micro station is a MUST.

  • Knowledge of Dig Silent Power factory, CDEGS, PROKON is an added advantage

  • Excellent command of the Microsoft Office package.

  • Experience in the petrochemical, water treatment or mining environments.

  • Thorough knowledge of IEEE, ESKOM and/or SASOL Standards.

  • MV distribution networks within Power Stations/ Mining Plant/ Petro-Chemical Plants.

  • Knowledge of Dig Silent Power Factory/ PSSE/ ETAP/ Retic Master is an added advantage.

  • Working within a multi-discipline project environment.

  • Basic knowledge of the Microsoft Office package.

  • Thorough knowledge of ESKOM and IEEE Standards

  • Experience within Power Station/ Transmission/ Distribution/ Mining/ Petro-Chemical.

Other comments:

  • The candidate will be required to attend regular project site meetings and conduct site inspections and provide commissioning support to clients/contractors on site.

Preferred Qualifications

  • University degree in Electrical Engineering (MSc. Degree will be an advantage).

  • Professional registration (Pr.Eng or Pr.Tech) with Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).
