Job Summary

AECOM is seeking an Environmental Compliance Field Inspector to be based in our Carlsbad, NM location.

The successful candidate in this position is to perform general environmental waste management activities to compliantly and safely manage various waste types in accordance with Federal and State regulations prior to the waste being shipped off site for disposal. Candidate must possess quality skills to team with colleagues in a working atmosphere with the understanding that customer, state and federal oversight will occur during many activities.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Individual will work directly with Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) federal and state regulations in conducting the majority of work scope responsibilities. This may include but is not limited to:

  • Inspecting satellite accumulation areas and less than 90 day accumulation areas;

  • Managing low level and low level mixed waste, making hazardous waste determinations;

  • Reviewing and approving RCRA facility inspection records;

  • Providing guidance for implementing the RCRA Permit, RCRA regulations to WIPP facility personnel; and

  • Coordinating hazardous waste shipments to Transportation, Storage and Disposal Facilities (TSDFs).

  • Generally maintain the Facility to RCRA Large Quantity Generator standards.

  • Other functions will be routinely conducting inspections, completing data sheets, sampling waste material to determine waste characteristics, packaging waste for offsite disposal, maintain electronic files of various environmental and waste management activities, implementing non-RCRA related environmental regulations and Permits.

  • Position will require routine coordination with the WIPP Operations and Transportation Departments in the receipt and transport of waste for disposal.

  • Substantial training will be provided and the candidate must be able to implement these training requirements into daily work scope.

  • Formulate plans, maintain schedules, maintain logs, and various record keeping of tasks are aspects of the position, as well as competent working knowledge utilizing Word and Excel programs.

  • Occasionally there will be non-standard work schedules (e.g. evenings and weekends). Candidate must be able to support these programs as needs arise. Work scope will require candidate to be in the field during the heat of summer and cold of winter at times, as well as enter the underground mine weekly to conduct inspections.

  • Perform all other position related duties as assigned or requested.

Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands:

Typical office environment with no unusual hazards, occasional lifting to 20 pounds, sitting while using the computer terminal, constant use of sight abilities while reviewing documents, constant use of speech/hearing abilities for communication, constant mental alertness, must possess planning/organizing skills, and must be able to work under deadlines. In addition, field work will routinely occur. At times hot and cold temperature extremes occur and candidate must be able to function and accomplish work scope is these conditions.

Minimum Requirements

Minimum requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Studies, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and 3 to 5 years of work related experience.

  • Good communications and analytical skills; and working knowledge of Word and Excel software.

  • Valid driver's license required.

  • Due to the nature of the work, candidate must be a US Citizen.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred qualifications:

  • Knowledge of RCRA hazardous waste regulations

  • Experience with managing, sampling, packaging and transporting hazardous waste
