Position Title Principal Highways Engineer

Job Summary

Our Transportation Team, based in our new modern offices in Cardiff, currently has a vacancy for a Principal Highway Engineer with significant experience of the design and maintenance of major highways to work on local, national and international projects. The successful candidate will join our established transportation and highways business which continues to expand to meet current and future workload.

The successful candidate will be a chartered civil engineer (MICE) and have proven design and management experience in multidisciplinary teams. The candidate will have experience of working as part of project teams developing a range of engineering solutions from initial concept through to detailed design for implementation.

Job Responsibilities:

An appropriate level of technical expertise is required in order that the Job/Project Accountabilities listed below can be carried out to the expected standards.

  • Provide technical input and leadership in the field of highway engineering.

  • Demonstrate a broad technical understanding across a range of highways disciplines including drainage, geotechnics, pavements and structures, and the ability to seek specialist advice when required.

  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills including the ability to prepare detailed technical reports.

  • Undertake the role of Project Manager as necessary.

  • Undertake a variety of tasks as an individual or through management of a team.

  • Undertake project activities in line with Company Policy, including technical and commercial aspects.

  • Assess staff requirements at each stage of the project.

  • Prepare resource plans, delivery programmes and fee proposal.

  • Undertake Health and Safety duties including ensuring a safe and healthy working environment for design team and fulfilling all responsibilities for health and safety in design.

  • Plan and attend meetings – internal and external, as required.

  • Liaison with sub-consultants and external parties, as required.

  • Build and maintain excellent Client relationships.

  • Undertake business development activities and secure opportunities with new and existing Clients.

Minimum Requirements

Essential Experience:

  • Significant experience of highway technical design on major projects.

  • Experience of preparing report documents.

  • Experience of managing multidisciplinary teams.

  • Site experience during construction.

  • BSc, BEng, or higher degree in Civil Engineering

  • Chartered status and membership of a relevant professional institution (MICE)

Preferred Qualifications

Desired Experience:

  • Understanding of Health and Safety responsibilities including CDM.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with Contractors.
