Job Summary

Our Transportation Team, based in our new modern offices in Cardiff, currently has a vacancy for a Principal Highway Engineer with significant experience of the design and maintenance of major highways to work on local, national and international projects. The successful candidates will join our established transportation and highways business which continues to expand to meet current and future workload.

The successful candidate will chartered (MICE) and have proven design and management experience of multidisciplinary teams. The candidate will have experience of working as part of project teams developing a range of engineering solutions from initial concept through to detailed design for implementation.

We are looking to enhance and enlarge the team in Cardiff with people who have a sound technical background and share our enthusiasm and determination. The office is currently engaged on a number of interesting and challenging projects in Wales, as well as supporting projects in other regional offices.

Our services offered to our clients include the full range and scope of major highways from inception to completion across all the key discipline areas. Our client list includes Welsh Government, South Wales Trunk Road Agency, South West Wales Regional Engineering Framework, Cardiff Council, Vale of Glamorgan Council, Pembrokeshire Council and other national clients.

Job Responsibilities:

An appropriate level of technical expertise is required in order that the Job/Project Accountabilities listed below can be carried out to the expected standards.

  • Provide technical input and leadership in the field of highway engineering.

  • Demonstrate a broad technical understanding across a range of highways disciplines including drainage, geotechnics, pavements and structures, and the ability to seek specialist advice when required.

  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills including the ability to prepare detailed technical reports.

  • Undertake the role of Project Manager as necessary.

  • Undertake a variety of tasks as an individual or through management of a team.

  • Undertake project activities in line with Company Policy, including technical and commercial aspects.

  • Assess staff requirements at each stage of the project.

  • Prepare resource plans, delivery programmes and fee proposal.

  • Undertake Health and Safety duties including ensuring a safe and healthy working environment for design team and fulfilling all responsibilities for health and safety in design.

  • Plan and attend meetings – internal and external, as required.

  • Liaison with sub-consultants and external parties, as required.

  • Demonstrate a sound understanding of contracts.

  • Prepare robust contract documents to enable the successful delivery of our projects through the construction phase.

  • Manage the construction phase of projects, including undertaking the role of NEC Project Manager and Supervisor.

  • Structure and set up projects, allocate budgets and co-ordinate timely issuing of invoices, and payments.

  • Build and maintain excellent Client relationships.

  • Undertake business development activities and secure opportunities with new and existing Clients.

Minimum Requirements

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Significant experience of highway technical design on major projects.

  • Ability to work independently.

  • Delivery of highway maintenance schemes.

  • Understanding of Health and Safety responsibilities including CDM.

  • Experience of preparing report documents.

  • Experience of managing multidisciplinary teams.

  • Experience of executing the role of NEC3 Project Manager and Supervisor during construction.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with Contractors.

Preferred Qualifications

  • BSc, BEng, or higher degree in Civil Engineering

  • Chartered status and membership of a relevant professional institution (MICE)
