Job Summary

AECOM is a leading provider of engineering, construction and technical services for public agencies and private sector companies around the world. The company also offers cultural resource management services for the U.S. federal government, state and local government agencies, Fortune 500 companies and other multinational corporations. The Cultural Resource Division of AECOM is actively seeking a creative, highly talented Archaeological Technician for temporary employment with the Burlington, New Jersey office. However, the candidate will be working on various projects in the Middle Atlantic and New England regions. This is a part-time variable position, meaning work days and times will be determined on an as-needed basis.

The appropriately qualified applicant will be able to demonstrate an established career in cultural resources management, specific to conducting field investigations and digital data collection. AECOM is proud to provide our employees with exciting, challenging projects. This position reports directly to a Crew Chief or Archaeological Supervisor when performing duties in the field and to a Laboratory Supervisor or Laboratory Manager when performing duties in the laboratory. Must be able to work effectively in both the field and laboratory as part of a team.

Responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to:

  • Conduct archaeological investigations/excavations; screen soil deposits

  • Take accurate field notes; draw accurate profiles and plan views

  • Record archaeological field data; use digital camera

  • Process artifacts (wash, mark and catalog) and perform basic analysis of artifacts

  • Re-bag and re-box artifact collections for final curation

  • Perform basic research on manufacturing processes as it relates to recovered artifacts

  • Assist in digital data collection within a variety of settings

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Anthropology, History, Museum Studies, or related field or higher and attended an archaeological field school

  • Possess or be able to obtain a Security Clearance, as issued by the Delaware Department of Public Safety

  • Must pass a State and Federal criminal history/security background check; many projects/ clients are security sensitive

  • Must pass pre-employment drug screen

  • Must participate in and successfully complete a post-offer, pre-employment fitness for duty questionnaire

  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record

  • Knowledge of basic field excavation techniques, ability to process (wash, catalog and mark) recovered archaeological artifacts, properly fill out field and laboratory forms, perform extensive manual labor including excavation with shovels and moving buckets and wheelbarrows filled with dirt

  • Basic knowledge of GIS applications

  • Flexibility to travel overnight and out of state for up to 3+ months at a time

  • Excellent work ethic and team-player attitude

  • Strong attention to detail, with proven ability to follow specific instructions

  • Ability to effectively express his or herself orally and in writing to other project staff

  • Basic computer skills; Microsoft Office applications

  • Physically able, with or without an accommodation, to extensively perform bending, kneeling standing and lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 lbs.

  • Must have a tolerance for working in outdoor environments, prolonged walking and standing on various terrain in a wide range of weather conditions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to utilize PC data base programs.

  • Familiarity with cultural resource management protocols.

  • Some experience with conducting laboratory analysis of both prehistoric and historic material

  • Proficiency in MS Project, MS Access, AutoCAD, and/or ArcGIS software suites is a plus
