About the Business Line


We create comprehensive delivery solutions for water, wastewater and wet weather systems, desalination, water resources, water reuse, tunneling, and community infrastructure through traditional and alternative delivery services such as program management and design-build.

Job Summary

AECOM's tunnelling specialists provide a service both to sectors within the Group as well as undertaking direct commissions with external consultants and contractors.

Recent awards on Thames Tideway Tunnel, Shieldhall Tunnel, Network Rail Framework and the Nuclear Repository Framework continue to increase our involvement in some of the world’s most challenging projects. Recent and ongoing projects also include Crossrail (London) & IDRIS (Qatar) plus key pursuits such as HS2, Silvertown Tunnel, Trans Pennine Route, Lower Thames Crossing and Nuclear New Build.

A wide variety of works are undertaken by the team which range from hard & soft ground tunnelling to no-dig microtunnelling and directional drilling for utilities companies, condition assessment of existing tunnelled infrastructure, expert technical assessments for lenders in the financial sector..

In line with the growth of AECOM and the award of several contracts we are actively looking to expand the core tunnelling business.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced professional to manage and further develop our core team in Birmingham while also playing an active role in an expanding the business within the UK and overseas.

This is a challenging role involving the management of a team of technical professionals who have significant experience in the transport and utility sectors. You will need to demonstrate experience of leading and developing a similar team while also running projects in their own right.

You will be responsible for meeting agreed business targets, managing resources and for identifying, developing and managing business opportunities.

Minimum Requirements

  • The successful candidate must have a minimum qualification of BSc, preferably in Civil Engineering, Civil & Structural Engineering or Engineering Geology.

  • The candidate must be a chartered and a member of a professional body (eg MICE).

  • The candidate must be interested in tunnelling projects and promoting the tunnelling activities in the transport, power and utility sectors.

  • The candidate must have a proven ability to work within a multidisciplinary team of engineers and other technical professionals with the ability to act as a mentor to younger engineers.

  • The candidate must have the capability to satisfy client and business expectations and be able to consider the wider financial and commercial implications of their actions.

  • It is essential that the candidate is able to communicate effectively to internal and external clients, both verbally & in writing. They must also be able to structure & prioritise work effectively through close cooperation with the team.

Importantly, this position requires the candidate must also have the ability to work independently without losing initiative & focus.

Membership and an active interest in the British Tunnelling Society and other professional societies would also be advantageous.

  • A degree in Civil Engineering, Civil & Structural Engineering or Engineering Geology.

  • Chartered Engineer (MICE)
