Job Summary

AECOM are looking to establish a landscape team in our Birmingham office, initially as a satellite to the Manchester office, following several major project wins. We have a vacancy for a Principal Landscape Architect with good written/design skills, preferably with experience of large scale infrastructure projects and the ability to develop manage a small team with assistance from other offices. This is an exciting opportunity for someone to join a team with a ready-made workload and be involved in ensuring its delivery from initial planning through to final completion. The role will initially involve frequent visits on site in conjunction with another landscape architect.

The successful candidate will be appointed alongside a graduate/post graduate Landscape Architect and will join a wider national team of mostly chartered landscape architects delivering to quality, time and budget. You will be offered support to expand your experience and develop the Birmingham landscape presence within a structured, friendly team environment. There is the potential and desire to build the team within Birmingham to complement AECOM’s national network of landscape offices.

Our Birmingham office has an established track record of successfully delivering high profile, multi-disciplinary infrastructure schemes. Our modern office, 10 minutes walk from New Street station, has a multi-disciplinary focus with the opportunity to work alongside other disciplines and contribute to shared project objectives.

Our clients are from the private and public sector and include Highways England, HS2, the Environment Agency and numerous Local Authorities across the Yorkshire & Humber and Midlands region. We also have a proven track record of successfully delivering projects for multi-national organisations.

Our current portfolio of works comprises a diverse mix of local and national infrastructure improvements for major clients. A selection of our current and recent projects includes:

• HS2 Independent Assessor of Plant Material : ongoing inspection/monitoring and quality assurance for large numbers of native plants for the HS2 Phase 1 project

• HS2 Phase 1 – West Midlands metropolitan section assessment and mitigation design

• Leicester flood conveyance design and implementation on multiple sites within the city centre

• M54/M6 landscape and visual impact assessment for a new highway

• SHLAA housing assessments for local authorities in Nottinghamshire

• LVIA of numerous small scale development types – from minerals to retail.

Job Responsibilities:

The appropriate level of technical expertise is required in order to assist with:

• Managing site survey work and the baseline/assessment which will follow on from them

• Research, writing and assembly of LVIAs

• Developing mitigation strategy and design solutions to reduce landscape and visual effects from new infrastructure.

• You will be able to demonstrate experience or understanding of Health and Safety compliance and prepare and review risk assessments

• You will have a flexible approach to supporting the existing teams in Manchester and Chesterfield, which is likely to involve travel to sites typically within 2 hours of the office and full days in the field recording information for processing back in the office.

• Ability to programme workload for yourself and others and supervise/review design/written content.

• Good ACAD and word skills as well as attention to detail and compliance with file naming and filing conventions.

• Ability to make judgments based on site survey, scheme knowledge and justify conclusions to others.

• Provide a point of contact internally and externally for existing and new clients and to represent AECOM at multi-disciplinary meetings.

Minimum Requirements

• You will have good technical and communication skills ideally with experience of organizing and delivering complex LVIAs.

• Evidence of ability to work in a large team and manage the workload of others.

• Driving licence essential

• You will be able to demonstrate experience or understanding of Health and Safety compliance and review and approve risk assessments.

• You will have a flexible approach to supporting the existing teams in Manchester and Chesterfield, which is likely to involve travel to sites typically within 2 hours of the office and full days in the field recording information for processing back in the office.

• Good photoshop, ACAD and word skills as well as attention to detail and compliance with file naming and filing conventions.

• Ability to make judgments based on site survey, analysis of development proposals and justify conclusions on likely effects and appropriate mitigation.

Preferred Qualifications

• You will have a relevant degree and a post graduate qualification. You will be a Chartered member of the Landscape Institute
