Job Summary

We have a vacancy for a experienced Senior Highways Engineer with roads technical experience, to work on local, national and international schemes from our offices in Bedford. The successful candidate will join AECOM’s established South East Region highways business which continues to expand.

Our project teams are currently delivering major highways and infrastructure projects for high profile clients; we are now looking to grow this team with individuals who have a sound technical background and business development capabilities that share our enthusiasm and determination to develop our business.

The successful candidate will be Chartered Engineer with proven design and project management experience, delivering to quality, time and budget. They will have experience of working collaboratively as part of a team developing a range of major highway and infrastructure projects. The role will suit a self-motivated individual who is aspiring to take a lead role in project delivery and manage dynamic teams delivering high quality projects. The person will need adopt a flexible approach and be able to work away from Bedford for short duration to suit project needs.

AECOM’s Bedford office is an established and vibrant office with over 40 years highways business with accumulated skills, experience and an established culture in the delivery of all types of roads schemes: from major motorways to smaller local authority improvement schemes.

Current projects in the South East Region include Highways England Road Investment Strategy programme for East and Midlands, Transport for London Cycle Super Highways programme and Better Junctions programme and we continue to support Major Contractors on Design & Build highway and infrastructure projects.

Our current client list includes Highways England, Transport for London Transport Scotland, Highways England, Welsh Government, Local Authorities in the South East and various contractors.

Job responsibilities include:

  • Production of technical design information including, drawings and specifications

  • Ensuring compliance with all relevant technical standards;

  • Identification and management of project risks.

  • Delivery of all specified project outcomes on time, within budget and to the quality required;

  • Managing the workload and the technical management and oversight of a design team;

  • Writing and overseeing the preparation of contract documents and technical reports as required;

  • Communication to the immediate team, the wider organisation and external parties;

  • Coaching, mentoring and developing junior staff;

  • Managing and developing both internal and external client relationships;

  • Identification and management of project risks.

Minimum Requirements

  • A graduate in Civil Engineering or equivalent with experience of Highway Engineering in directly relevant fields.

  • A highly motivated Chartered Engineer with excellent communication skills

  • Full lifecycle experience across a range of projects

  • Significant technical design experience across a range of disciplines to DMRB and MCHW.

  • Experience of Statutory Orders and Procedures

  • Demonstrable understanding of Health and Safety including CDM;

  • Full clean driving licence;

  • Possess excellent oral and written communication skills;

  • Strive for technical excellence.

Preferred Qualifications

  • BSc, BEng or MEng degree in Civil Engineering desirable

  • Chartered Engineer and member of a professional institution.

  • Highways Design experience

  • Design and Build Experience

  • Site Supervision experience

  • Experience in Section 104, Section 38 and Section 278 Agreements.
