Job Summary

The AECOM Baltimore, Maryland, office has an exciting opportunity for a Signal Engineer to join our team in the Transportation Business Unit to manage a major Metro railcar and train control replacement contract. As a Project Manager/Signal Engineer you will work closely with the Client and report to Director of Maryland Transit Rail.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Will participate in planning, design, construction, maintenance or project management of Transit Rail Systems Project

  • Design infrastructure assets including signals, train stops, track circuits, train detection systems, point operation and detection systems, traction (electrical current) return arrangements, vital interlocking systems, SCADA/telemetry systems, and active level crossings

  • Perform testing and commissioning of new signaling systems and maintaining signaling and associated supporting systems

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field

  • 10+ years’ experience in Transit Rail Signal Engineering Projects

  • Transit/Rail Systems Experience in planning, design and construction management of new and refurbish/replacement of systems elements

  • Prior experience as the construction manager of a major transit systems contract

  • Transit/Rail Systems Experience related signals, train control, vehicles, communication, and traction power

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills

  • Effective communication, both oral and written, computer skills, and proficiency in maintaining necessary records

  • Experience or knowledge with Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), Federal Transit Administration

  • Must possess a valid driver's license

Preferred Qualifications

  • MBA preferred

  • 15+ years of relevant work experience with a demonstrated history of increasing responsibilities and a minimum of eight years managing an engineering team

  • Professional Engineer certified

  • Knowledge of the CFR, AREMA and IEEE and how they pertain to train control.

  • Experience with cost estimating

Understanding of the following attributes of a signaling system:

  1. Train Control Systems

  2. Working knowledge or direct design and implementation of advanced train control systems such as CBTC, PTC or ERTMS

  3. Code and Aspect Signal Charts

  4. Power Supplies and Distribution

  5. Wayside signaling including wayside/cab, switch machines, track circuits and cross bonding, And / or axle counters

  6. At grade crossings (constant and fixed warning systems) and traffic preemption

  7. Vital relay and microprocessor based systems

  8. Non vital relay or PLC applications

  9. Local Control Panels and/or Computer-Based Operator Workstations

  10. Cabling Distribution
