Job Summary

The Transportation Division of AECOM’s Baltimore office is actively seeking a Field Paint Inspector for existing steel bridges for immediate employment. The qualified candidate will meet all parts of the job description and be able to demonstrate the required knowledge and experience to perform on-site paint inspections. The work will be conducted on-site under the general direction of a higher level paint inspector or professional engineer. The Inspector will be assigned to perform on-site paint inspection work at a variety of steel bridge structures throughout the state of Maryland. This is position is contingent upon award of contract.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Serves as a principal inspector on medium-size construction projects

  • May lend technical guidance to client personnel assigned to project and review the Contractor’s operations to assure technical adherence to plans and specifications

  • Advises interested parties as to the Contractor’s progress, possible over-run of quantities or potential delays

  • Maintains accurate records and reports

  • Performs and analyzes results of field tests

  • Performs other necessary duties as required

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma

  • 2+ years of relevant work experience

  • Must possess a valid driver's license and have a reliable means of transportation

  • Must be in good health and physically able to perform the duties required of the position

  • Must also be able to read, write, comprehend and fluently speak the English language

  • Willing to travel and be available for working any part of the State, subject to change of assignment as work requires; applicants may also be required to work various shifts and on weekends depending on assignments

  • Elementary knowledge of algebra, geometry, trigonometry and English

  • Introductory knowledge of basic civil engineering principles

  • Working knowledge of highway construction inspection principles, practices, methods and tests

  • Have ability to write field notes, make computations and establish control points for linear measurement

  • Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications

  • Working knowledge of engineering tables and reference materials

  • Ability to supervise, lend technical guidance and train if needed

  • Proficient with clerical and statistical work requiring application of basic engineering knowledge in all areas aforesaid and able to prepare necessary reports

  • Ability to supervise the inspection of small or medium size highway construction projects for conformance to plans and specifications

  • Ability to deal effectively with other employees of the State Highway Administration as well as others



  • National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) Coatings Inspector Level I, Or

  • Society of Protective Coatings (SSPC) Bridge Coatings Inspector (BCI) Level I, Or

  • Equivalent Coatings Inspection Training.


  • Society of Protective Coatings (SSPC) C-3 Supervisor / Competent Person for Deleading of Industrial Structures, Or

  • Society of Protective Coatings (SSPC) C-5 Supervisor/Competent Person for Deleading of Industrial Structures Refresher ", Or

  • Equivalent Lead Abatement Training


  • SHA Temporary Traffic Control Manager Certification

  • NOTES: Applicants may substitute N.l.C.E.T. Level 2 or higher certification or education in an engineering curriculum at an accredited junior college, college or-university at the rate of thirty semester credit hours per year for up to one (1) year of the required experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of relevant work experience

  • Have performed paint inspections for the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) as a Transportation Engineering Technician III or IV within the past 3 years.

  • Possess a good track record with the SHA with references

  • Be a Maryland resident or live within reasonable commuting distance
