Job Summary

We are currently recruiting for a Technical Director - Bridge Engineering to join our centrally located Altrincham office, which has an established track record of successfully delivering major transport schemes.

Our Altrincham office has an established track record of successfully delivering bridge engineering schemes for over 25 years, mainly in the North West but also throughout the UK and overseas. The team provides concept, feasibility, preliminary and detailed designs on a wide range of schemes, either as standalone bridge commissions or as part of multidisciplinary major projects. Recently won projects included extension of Manchester Metrolink Network, a major rail network improvement scheme and a major new road infrastructure scheme, all in the Greater Manchester area. In addition the team has significant long term commissions on bridge assessment and inspection, principally in the rail environment, often leading to the requirement for refurbishment or replacement.

Our current portfolio of works comprises a diverse mix of local and national new build plus infrastructure improvements. A selection of our current and recent projects includes the Northern Hub, Manchester Metrolink Trafford Park Extension, A6MARR, CAFA Rail Bridge inspection and assessment, A494/A55/A548 Optioneering and outline design of structures relating to route options for improvements to the road network around Queensferry for Welsh Government.

As a Technical Director – Bridge Engineering, you will have the following daily responsibilities:

• Undertake and project-manage bridge engineering schemes from feasibility through to detailed design.

• Responsible for production through to client sign off of Technical Approval documentation.

• Analysis and detailed design of road/rail bridges and other structures.

• Inspection, assessment and strengthening of road/rail bridges and other structures.

• Client liaison and the production of tenders, including quality documentation and costings.

• Project Management including program and resource monitoring, quality control, technical management and delivery.

• Lead the local office team with accountability for project performance, utilisation, training and bidding.

• Fulfil role of technical expert providing technical leadership in chosen field and/or fulfil role of Project Director.

• Approve engineering design principles, philosophy and scheme design report.

• Manage and lead the development of detailed brief and design philosophy with the client and team members.

• Effectively undertake project and team activities in line with company policy, including commercial, managerial and technical aspects.

• Provide leadership and management of staff and ensure effective communication of business issues to all staff reporting to you.

• Be aware of the critical issues to ensure proper completion. Provide technical and contractual support to Project Managers.

• Understand and implement AECOM’s Safety Health and Environment Policy.

• Effectively mentor engineers in their progress towards Professional qualification.

Minimum Requirements

• Proven design and project management experience delivering to quality, time and budget.

• Significant experience of leading project teams, including major project multidisciplinary teams, developing a range of bridge and other associated structures scheme solutions from initial concept through to detailed design for implementation.

• Overseas project experience would also be an advantage.

• The role will suit a self-motivated individual looking to lead teams and to advance their career both technically and in project management in a dynamic structures team of around 80 engineers and technicians.

• Experience with bridge and related structural inspection assessment and design schemes.

• Proven design and project management experience delivering to quality, time and budget.

• Significant experience in road and rail bridge projects.

• High level technical skills in current inspection, assessment and design.

• Previous exposure with clients of both national and local authorities, together with major contractors.

• Ability to manage staff and project Health and Safety responsibilities including compliance with CDM legislation.

Preferred Qualifications

• Degree educated or equivalent in a relevant subject such as Bridge, Civil or Structural Engineering.

• Ideally educated to MSc level or equivalent.

• A Chartered Engineer with ICE or IstructE.
