Job Summary

AECOM is currently recruiting for a Geotechnical Engineer to join our well established and experienced Ground Engineering team in Altrincham.

We are looking for an ambitious team player who has a passion for problem solving and who wishes to develop innovative, cost effective and buildable solutions in an environment that is collaborative, stimulating and demanding.

We require an applicant with experience in geotechnical fieldwork and studies, factual and interpretative reporting and geotechnical design for infrastructure projects.

Our Altrincham team supports internal and external clients on a wide variety of projects, but predominantly in road and rail infrastructure, new build and upgrade, and Local Authority and developer projects in the North West of England. The projects are diverse and include development of brownfield sites.

Nationally our Ground Engineering team comprises some 175 staff and provides one-stop access to services ranging from project management, feasibility studies, detailed design, contract administration and construction supervision for geotechnical works. We work for leading UK clients including Highways England, Network Rail, Homes and Communities Agency, Local Authorities, as well as for leading contractors and developers and for overseas clients. AECOM has an impressive portfolio of projects, working on a range of major infrastructure projects in the North West of England including the Trafford Park Metrolink tram extension, Northern Hub rail upgrade, Mersey Gateway and the Manchester Airport Relief Road, as well as wider national projects including Crossrail, Thames Tideway, HS2, and Hinkley C and Sellafield nuclear power stations.

The role will involve desk studies, ground investigation planning and direction, interpretation, design and reporting of geotechnical works including soil and rock slope stability, foundations, retaining structures, earthworks and ground improvement.

You will work under the supervision of a Principal Engineer and must have strong behavioural competencies with respect to client care, collaborative working, responsibility and independent decision making.

You will be numerate and ideally have experience of routine design software for data manipulation, assessment of soil settlement, soil and rock slope stability and for design of foundations and retaining structures.

Candidates will have the potential and desire to progress to a more senior position.

Minimum Requirements

Previous working experience in engineering geology and geotechnics.

Possess strong problem solving and inter-personal skills. Works closely and collaboratively with colleagues and clients.

An understanding of ground investigation and willing to undertake monitoring of site works for varied projects across the UK.

Strong written and verbal communication skills; the ability to write concise technical reports is essential.

Ideally experienced in site walkovers, soil and rock logging and sampling.

Good knowledge of soil and rock parameter selection and understanding of design principles detailed under EC7.

Knowledge of UK ground conditions but particularly those of Northern England is advantageous.

Appreciation of relevant Eurocodes and UK standards and specifications, in particular those of Network Rail and Highways England would be advantageous.

Licensed to drive a vehicle in the UK.

Willing to travel to other offices and sites within the UK if required by work demand.

Actively progressing towards Chartered Engineer / Geologist status.

Preferred Qualifications

A degree in Civil Engineering and a relevant post graduate qualification in Engineering Geology or Geotechnical Engineering. Candidates holding a BSc Geology and an appropriate further degree will be considered provided that they are strongly numerate
