Job Summary

AECOM is seeking a Structural Supervising Discipline Engineer 5 to be based in our Aiken, SC office.

The Supervising Discipline Engineer 5 is responsible for managing the discipline engineering to meet customer and project requirements regarding scope, scheduling and budgets. Provides a liaison between discipline engineers and Project Engineering Managers and between Project Managers, Chief Discipline Engineers and Principal Engineers with respect to project scope, budget, scheduling and overall engineering and design requirements and employee administration.

Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Identify and quantify engineering activities and deliverables required to support assigned projects scope of work.

  2. Manage assigned staff to effectively execute assigned scope of work.

  3. Assume responsibility for ensuring that engineering documents are technically correct and that they comply with project requirements and applicable company procedures.

  4. Coordinate the discipline's engineering with that of other disciplines.

  5. Works in a team with Supervising Discipline Engineers of other disciplines, Project Engineering Managers and Principal Engineers.

  6. Participates in project meetings, client meetings, etc., communicates effectively, and behaves professionally.

  7. Maintain records, files and other documents pertaining to the discipline.

  8. Assume responsibility for ensuring that engineering documents comply with applicable state laws/regulations, including affixing registered engineer seal when required.

  9. Assign preparers and checkers for discipline specifications and coordinates review of external specifications.

  10. Establish schedules and budgets to meet project requirements and obtains approval.

  11. Maintain technical coordination with the Principal Engineer to ensure adherence to industry codes, regulatory requirements and sound engineering practices.

  12. Direct the preparation and submits periodic reports and forecasts on the status of the discipline.

  13. Comply with state requirements for continuing education, maintains and obtains licenses as requested.

  14. Continually upgrade technical knowledge and capabilities and pursues additional coursework and training.

  15. Advises the Project Engineering Manager regarding status of assignment(s) with respect to schedule, budgets, delays and adverse problems.

  16. Work closely with Chief Discipline Engineers, Principal Engineers and Project Engineering Managers on employees_ evaluations and promotions and the overall technical improvement of the group.

  17. Lead the development of manpower, man-hour, and labor cost requirements for a project and can monitor the effect of these on the budget.

  18. Able to lead all aspects of estimating for a discipline.

  19. Responsible for performance management and mentoring.

  20. Provide assistance to projects to address technical issues related to process improvement.

  21. Lead project change control process and train others and can identify potential changes.

  22. Lead planning and scheduling of engineering tasks within a specific discipline.

  23. Develop, design and conduct training programs within area of technical expertise.

  24. Provide assistance to projects to address technical issues related to process improvement.

  25. Attend project meetings as required (may require travel).

Minimum Requirements

Minimum requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science degree (or equivalent education) in structural engineering from a four year accredited college or university;

  • Experience: 15+ years of professional experience with 5 years of supervisory experience;

  • Professional Engineering License required;

  • Has an advanced level of knowledge within a specific discipline and a strong understanding of the other disciplines;

  • Good oral and written communication skills; working knowledge of word-processing and integrated software applications;

  • Organizational skills and ability to perform detail-oriented work are required;

  • Advanced knowledge and demonstrable experience in application of seismic requirements, including development and application of seismic response spectra;

  • Advanced knowledge and demonstrable experience in the use of standard structural design software, including GT STRUDL, ANSYS, STAAD AND Mathcad;

  • Advanced knowledge and demonstrable experience in creating studies, reports and presentations using Excel, Word, and Power Point;

  • Familiarity with government regulations, standards and nuclear quality requirements;

  • Due to the nature of the work, candidates must be a US Citizen.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least 15 years of commercial/DOE nuclear structural experience;

  • Leadership experience on EPC projects;

  • Recognized expertise on discipline related design codes and standards;

  • Master of Science or Doctorate in specialty discipline;

  • Established contact or working relationship with external regulatory agencies (DOE; DNFSB).
